Downtown Charleston Renovation
A modest cottage on a quiet downtown Charleston street, comprehensively rebuilt into a refined modern residence with a separate accessory dwelling above.
The exterior was reset in a deep charcoal lap siding with a natural-wood entry door — a confident, restrained palette that holds its own among the historic neighbors. The footprint was thoughtfully extended at the rear to accommodate a second-story dwelling, accessed via an external staircase clad to match the primary home.
Inside, the work is where the project's ambition becomes clear. The kitchen pairs full-overlay shaker cabinets in white with a contrasting natural-oak island, topped in book-matched Calacatta quartz; the cathedral ceiling overhead is finished in tongue-and-groove cypress, opening the principal living space vertically and saturating it with light. The primary bath is sheathed floor-to-ceiling in honed Calacatta marble with fluted detail tile and matte black plumbing — a quiet, hotel-grade space. A powder room downstairs takes a more graphic posture, with a high-contrast black-and-white marble checkerboard set on the diagonal.
Throughout: site-finished engineered hardwoods in a soft natural tone, full-height casework, recessed door pulls in black, and millwork detailing typical of our peninsula work.
